If You Don’t Ask, You Don’t Get

Have you ever paused to consider the mantras that guide your life? These short, powerful statements can shape your identity and keep you focused on what really matters.

They act as mental anchors, helping you navigate challenges and stay on track when distractions arise.

For me, there’s one mantra that stands above all others: If You Don’t Ask, You Don’t Get (I.Y.D.A.Y.D.G.).

This simple yet profound statement has been a guiding principle in my personal and professional journey. It’s not just a catchy phrase; it’s a philosophy, a way of being, a sense of identity. It’s not about just asking for things, but about believing that I am good enough to get what I deserve in life.

Let me explain how this mantra can transform the way you approach opportunities, relationships, and challenges.

The Power of Asking

Unless you’re part of the bloodline in Succession, the world ain’t going to hand us what we want on a silver platter.

Opportunities don’t magically appear, Houdinie. They’re created by those who dare to ask for them. Whether it’s a referral, feedback, a pay raise, or a new business opportunity, the first step is always the same: you have to ask.

Far too often, we hold back out of fear—fear of rejection, fear of being seen as entitled, or fear of stepping outside our comfort zones.

But let’s be honest, what’s the worst thing that could happen? They say no. That’s it. And while a “no” may sting momentarily, it’s far less damaging than never knowing what could have been.

I’ve built my career on this principle. I ask for things not because I’m entitled, but because I know my worth and the value I bring. I don’t rely on external validation to justify my requests; I back myself. And if someone thinks I’m asking for too much, that’s their perception, not mine.

Just Do It …

This mantra isn’t just a motivational slogan; it’s a practical tool that you NEED in your locker

  • Ask for referrals: Don’t wait for others to offer introductions; take the initiative to ask.

  • Ask for feedback: Constructive criticism is one of the fastest ways to grow.

  • Ask for a pay raise: If you believe you’re delivering exceptional value, advocate for yourself.

  • Ask to be mentored: Learning from someone more experienced can accelerate your development.

  • Ask for repeat business: Satisfied clients are often happy to return, but they might need a nudge.

  • Ask for recommendations: Whether it’s a LinkedIn endorsement or a personal reference, don’t be shy about requesting support.

The beauty of asking is that it puts you in control. You’re no longer passively waiting for opportunities to come your way; you’re actively creating them.

Mr Apple Man was once just a boy who asked

One of the most famous advocates for “If you don’t ask, you don’t get” was Steve Jobs.

At the age of 12, Jobs boldly cold-called Bill Hewlett, the co-founder of Hewlett-Packard, to ask for spare parts for a school project. Not only did he get the parts, but Hewlett also offered him a summer internship at HP. This early act of audacity set the tone for Jobs’ future success.

Jobs’ willingness to ask for what he wanted—even when it seemed audacious—became a hallmark of his career. Whether it was negotiating with record labels for the iTunes Store or convincing John Sculley to join Apple as CEO, Jobs’ ability to ask with confidence opened doors that might have otherwise remained closed.

Inhaaale The Mantra …. Exhaaaale The Mantra

So tell me, or ask yourself, what is holding you back from asking? Is it fear of rejection? Doubt in your entitlement? An imposter syndrome?

Whatever it is, let this mantra be your spiritual guide.

“If you don’t ask, you don’t get” is not just about being bold; it’s about recognizing your worth, embracing your value, and taking control of your destiny.

Start small. Make it a daily practice to ask for what you want. Over time, you’ll build confidence, and you’ll likely be surprised by how often the answer is “yes.”

Remember, nothing will be handed to you. The world is full of opportunities waiting for those who dare to ask. So, go ahead. Ask for the introduction. Ask for the meeting. Ask for the chance. Because if you don’t ask, you’ll never know what’s possible.
